Cardinal Aluminum Co. acquired by M

Cardinal Aluminum Co. and its subsidiaries have been acquired by Oklahoma City-based M-D Building Products Inc.

William "Chip" Edwards, CEO and president of Cardinal Aluminum Co., said in a news release that as the company celebrates its 75th anniversary this year, he recognized it was time to secure the long-term future of the company by joining M-D Building Products.

Details of the transaction were not disclosed and Cardinal declined to provide any information beyond the release. That said, Cardinal Aluminum's facility alone has an assessed value of $1.7 million per Jefferson County Property Valuation Administrator records. The family-owned company was founded locally in 1946 and sits on 5.5 acres of land at 6910 Preston Highway.

"We have admired M-D and the Plotkin family for years as they have grown their company through several strategic acquisitions the past decade," Edwards said in a news release. "Cardinal and M-D Building Products represent the perfect fit. Our philosophies, values and capabilities are aligned, and we believe Cardinal's future as part of M-D is bright as America's manufacturing sector expands over the next several years."

Cardinal Aluminum provides custom aluminum extrusion, fabrication and finishing to customers across North America. Its subsidiaries, Cardinal Architectural and Designer Mouldings, provide motorized louvered roof systems as well as metal and wood picture frame moldings, respectively.

Loren Plotkin, CEO and chairman of the board for M-D Building Products, said in a news release that the acquisition of Cardinal Aluminum Co. Strengthens M-D Building Products’ portfolio and supports its strategic growth plans by expanding its current offerings, deepening its vertical integration and opening new markets.

M-D Building Products, founded in 1920, operates nine manufacturing and distribution sites across the U.S. and Canada. The company manufactures, designs and markets a range of residential and commercial weather-proofing products such as door and window weather stripping, aluminum and wood flooring transitions and ancillary hardware products, to name a few.

"Similar to M-D, Cardinal has a long history of engineering and manufacturing customized products," Plotkin said in a news release. "As two privately held, family-owned companies, we share similar core values, and we are pleased to welcome the Cardinal family to M-D."

The company serves consumer retail and commercial flooring distributors, product manufacturers and professional paint markets and the acquisition will give M-D Building Products access to leverage Cardinal Aluminum Co.'s technical, manufacturing and marketing abilities on a larger scale, the release said. M-D Building Products is one of the nation's largest aluminum extrusion manufacturers.

"I am grateful for Chip and the wonderful business he and his family have created and grown the past 75 years," Plotkin said in a news release. "We have much in common as family-owned businesses. We are looking forward with high anticipation to welcoming the Cardinal team and working together to integrate our operations and grow the business."
