There's a Really Easy Way to Tell Who Owns Your Garden Fence

Do you know what side you own?

Garden fence responsibility can often be a subject of dispute amongst neighbours, but do you know which side you are responsible for? While there is no general rule, the experts say you should check which way your fence is facing to find out.

According to the team at Jacksons Fencing, every fence has two sides: a "good" side that is facing inwards and a "bad" side that is a little more unsightly. If your fence gets damaged by strong winds, this may help decide who foots the bill.

"Typically, you can guess who owns a fence by seeing where the rails are, with the fence typically facing away from their property so that their neighbour gets the 'good' side of the fence," Jacksons Fencing tell The Express.

"This is the most secure way of facing fencing so there are no rails for anyone to use to climb into your garden. This is then repeated with the neighbour on the other side to ensure that each home has both a 'good' and 'bad' fence side."

If you still find it challenging working out who owns the fence, you can also refer to the Title Plan or Land Registry. "Contrary to common belief, there is not a designated side of the fence to each property. In this, the 'T' mark is used to indicate who the boundary belongs to and therefore who is responsible for its upkeep."

It's not always easy speaking to neighbours about replacing the fence, especially if it is rotting or looks aged. The team explain that you can hire a disputes expert, but this will be recorded as an official dispute and will have to be declared when you sell your house.
