Cleaning hacks: The three

By Rachael Gavin| 21 hours ago

A professional cleaner has revealed the DIY mix she uses to transform dirty grout back to its original colour.

Kacie Stephens, who owns The Big Clean Co, describes the cleaning solution as a "superpower" grout cleaner, which can clean around your tiles without the harsh fumes of some store-bought cleaning products.

She shared the formula for the grout cleaner and explained how to use it in a video on her Instagram page.

The mixture features For All, a concentrated detergent product Stephens created.

"Using For All (I love the Peppermint scent, so yummy when cleaning), bicarb soda, and a bit of water to make the brush slide," she said.

The exact proportion of the ingredients is "1 cup bicarb, 1/4 cup For All, 1/4 cup of water".

You can also make this grout cleaner with just the detergent and bicarb soda if you want a thicker paste, but Stephens adds the water "to help it glide".

The Melbourne mum mixed the three ingredients in a sauce bottle container she bought online. The sauce container is a great tip for DIY grout cleaners as you can easily apply it to the thin lines of grout between your tiles.

To clean grout with the mix, Stephens applies it to the grout, then scrubs using a scrubbing brush with handle.

"I just give it a light scrub and then I wipe it off or you can mop it, but the point is no toxic fumes," she added.

In the video Stephens shows how effective the mixture is with a before-and-after look at the grout she cleaned with it. You can see a definite change in the colour of the old kitchen tile grout, which goes from a dirty grey to a much lighter colour.

Stephens said this combination is effective on other surfaces too and doesn't need to be used straight after making.

"Keep this mix for weeks (just shake before use): it can also be used on sinks, stove tops, smelly fridges and toilets," she said.

Stephens' DIY grout cleaner was well-received by her followers, with some planning to try it.

"Needed to see this, have some grout that needs a good clean, thank you!" one said.

"Fabulous," commented a follower.

"I need to go get a sauce bottle," wrote one.

"Excited to use this on my bathroom," said another.

If you don't have For All on hand you could always try bicarb soda and dishwashing detergent to clean grout with. Some people also like to add a little hydrogen peroxide to bicarb soda to help remove discolouration in grout.

When it comes to general grout maintenance, warm soapy water is considered effective for regular cleaning.
